It is formed with the negating prefix un- added to authentisch (authentic), and it can apply to objects, performances, representations, or attitudes. The term signals a deviation from what is perceived as real or true, and it often carries evaluative or critical connotations.

In practice, unauthentisch appears across cultural discourse, media criticism, marketing, and everyday speech. It can refer to tangible things such as imitation vintage items or counterfeit goods, but also to more subtle phenomena like staged or overly curated experiences that feel artificial. For instance, a film whose dialogue and set pieces read as contrived, or a restaurant presenting a “traditional” atmosphere that lacks lived cultural practice, may be described as unauthentisch. In advertising and branding, the term is used to critique practices that imitate authenticity without the underlying authenticity, sometimes described via related ideas such as Schein-Authentizität or pseudo-authenticity.
