Unstructured is an adjective used to describe something lacking a fixed form, organization, or predefined arrangement. In information science and data management, unstructured often refers to content that does not conform to a pre-established data model or schema and thus cannot be easily entered into a traditional database without processing.

In data terms, unstructured data include natural language text, emails, social media posts, video, audio, images, and web pages. By contrast, structured data are organized into specific fields in tables or databases; semi-structured data contain tags or markers that provide some organization but do not enforce a rigid schema. Handling unstructured data typically requires techniques such as natural language processing, computer vision, audio analysis, metadata extraction, and advanced indexing to enable search and analysis.

Applications of unstructured data include enterprise search, content recommendation, sentiment analysis, archival and compliance, and exploratory data analysis. The main challenges are scale, heterogeneity, noise, and ambiguity; extracting accurate meaning often requires domain-specific models and human oversight. Approaches include data mining, machine learning, and the use of metadata and ontologies to provide context.

The term is also used outside data contexts, such as in qualitative research, where unstructured interviews are conversations guided by broad questions rather than a fixed questionnaire.
