Umhverfisgæslu is the Icelandic term for environmental guardianship, describing the activities and institutions tasked with protecting the environment and public health through monitoring, regulation, and enforcement. The aim is to ensure compliance with environmental standards and to prevent harm to ecosystems and human health.

The Icelandic Environment Agency (Umhverfisstofnun) is the lead national body responsible for implementing environmental protection policy, issuing permits, conducting inspections, and coordinating enforcement. Law enforcement efforts related to environmental offences are carried out by the police (Lögreglan) in cooperation with municipalities and other relevant authorities. Local governments also play a crucial role in permitting, local monitoring, and public reporting.

The framework rests on Icelandic environmental laws and regulations governing general environmental protection, water and air quality, waste management, and nature conservation. The system is aligned with European Union and European Economic Area directives through Iceland’s membership in the EEA.
