Ulveflokker, which translates to "wolf packs" in English, refers to the social units in which wolves live and hunt. These packs are typically comprised of a breeding pair, known as the alpha male and alpha female, and their offspring from previous years as well as the current litter. The pack structure is hierarchical, with the alpha pair at the top, and a clear social order among other members. This organization is crucial for their survival, enabling them to hunt large prey, defend their territory, and raise young cooperatively.

Pack size can vary depending on factors such as prey availability and habitat. Smaller packs might consist of only a few individuals, while larger ones can number up to twenty or more. Communication within the pack is sophisticated, involving vocalizations like howls, body language, and scent marking. Howling serves multiple purposes, including reinforcing pack bonds, warning off rivals, and locating other pack members.

The cooperative nature of ulveflokker allows them to take down prey much larger than themselves, such as elk, deer, and moose. This communal hunting strategy increases their success rate and ensures that resources are efficiently utilized. Pack members also share responsibilities in raising pups, with all adults contributing to feeding and protecting the young. The dissolution of a pack can occur due to various reasons, including the death of alpha individuals, disease, or insufficient prey, which can lead to lone wolves dispersing to form new packs.
