udasi

Udasi is a monastic order within Sikhism. It was founded by Baba Sri Chand, the elder son of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. The Udasi sect differs from mainstream Sikhism in some practices and beliefs, though they share core tenets. Udasis are characterized by their ascetic lifestyle, often renouncing worldly possessions and family life to pursue spiritual devotion. They typically wear saffron-colored robes and follow a celibate path.

Historically, Udasi sadhus played a significant role in spreading Sikhism across the Indian subcontinent. They established numerous deras (monasteries) and gurdwaras, often in remote areas, and engaged in missionary work. Their emphasis on detachment from material pleasures and their yogic practices distinguish them. While they revere Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his teachings, their interpretation and practices sometimes diverge. For instance, they do not always adhere strictly to the Sikh code of conduct regarding married life and worldly involvement.

The Udasi order has seen periods of both prominence and decline throughout history. In modern times, while still present, their numbers are smaller compared to the mainstream Sikh population. They continue to maintain their distinct traditions and spiritual focus, contributing to the diverse tapestry of Sikh religious expression.
