At the shallowest level, information is processed based on its physical characteristics, such as the font of a word or the sound of a syllable. This is often referred to as structural processing. A slightly deeper level involves recognizing the word itself, its phonetic properties, or its grammatical category. This is known as phonemic or shallow semantic processing.

The deepest level of processing, often termed elaborative or semantic processing, involves connecting new information with existing knowledge, understanding its meaning, and considering its implications. This type of processing leads to better retention and recall because the information is more meaningfully encoded and integrated into one's cognitive framework.

The theory of processing levels posits that the depth of processing significantly influences memory. Information processed at a deeper, more meaningful level is more likely to be remembered than information processed superficially.
