Töötlusained, sometimes translated as processing aids, are substances added to materials during manufacturing to improve their processability or performance. These are distinct from additives that permanently alter the final product's properties. Instead, töötlusained facilitate a smoother or more efficient production process.

In the plastics industry, for example, common töötlusained include lubricants, which reduce friction between polymer chains or between the polymer and processing equipment. Mold release agents are another type, preventing the plastic from sticking to the mold. Plasticizers can be considered töötlusained when used to temporarily lower the melt viscosity, making extrusion or injection molding easier, even if they are also considered additives when they remain in the final product to impart flexibility.

In the textile industry, sizing agents are applied to warp yarns to strengthen them and reduce breakage during weaving. These are washed out after the fabric is produced. Similarly, coatings applied to paper during manufacturing can improve printability or surface smoothness, and some of these are considered töötlusained if they are primarily for processing.

The key characteristic of a töötlusaine is its role in the manufacturing phase. While some may be partially or fully removed during or after processing, others might remain in trace amounts within the final product. Their selection depends heavily on the specific material being processed and the desired outcome of the manufacturing operation.
