These periods are not continuous but rather episodic, suggesting underlying causes that lead to a temporary increase in the flux of impactors reaching a planet or moon.

The most well-studied example of a törmäysjakso is the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB), which is estimated to have occurred approximately 4.1 to 3.8 billion years ago. Evidence for the LHB comes from lunar cratering records and isotopic dating of lunar samples. While the exact duration and intensity of the LHB are still debated, it is widely believed to have profoundly shaped the surfaces of the inner solar system bodies, including Earth, the Moon, Mars, and Venus.

The causes of törmäysjaksoista are thought to be related to major dynamical events in the solar system. One leading hypothesis for the LHB involves the migration of the giant planets, particularly Jupiter and Saturn.
