törik

Törik is a Hungarian verb form meaning “breaks” or “is breaking.” It is the present tense, third-person singular form of the verb törni, which means to break or to crack. The root is used to describe the process of fracturing as well as the resulting state of something that has fractured.

In usage, törik is typically employed for intransitive breakage: the subject itself undergoes fracture, often of brittle materials such as glass, porcelain, ice, or metal under stress. Examples include the glass breaking (A pohár törik) and the ice breaking (A jég törik). By contrast, when the speaker wants to indicate that someone breaks something on purpose, the transitive form törni is used with a direct object (for example, töröm a poharat meaning “I break the glass”).

Hungarian also uses the past participle törött to denote something that has already broken, and the compound form megtört is used in perfect constructions to mean “has broken” or “was broken” (for example, megtört a pohár, the glass has broken).

Beyond literal breakage, törik can appear in idiomatic or figurative senses, often describing processes that deteriorate or fail over time, though such uses are less common than the straightforward physical sense.
