The tårkjørtelen, or lacrimal gland, is a small, almond-shaped gland located in the upper outer portion of each eye socket. Its primary function is to produce the watery component of tears. These tears are essential for lubricating the surface of the eye, washing away debris, and providing nourishment to the cornea. The lacrimal gland is part of the lacrimal apparatus, which also includes ducts that drain tears away from the eye.

Tears are secreted in a continuous, low-volume stream to keep the eye moist. However, the tårkjørtelen can also produce a much larger volume of tears in response to emotional stimuli, such as crying, or as a reflex to irritants like dust or foreign particles. This increased tear production helps to flush out the irritant and soothe the eye. The composition of tears includes water, electrolytes, antibodies, and enzymes that help protect the eye from infection.

Disorders affecting the tårkjørtelen can lead to problems with tear production. Insufficient tear production, known as dry eye syndrome, can cause discomfort, redness, and blurred vision. Conversely, excessive tearing, or epiphora, can be caused by overproduction of tears or blockages in the tear drainage system. The health and proper functioning of the tårkjørtelen are therefore crucial for maintaining ocular health and comfort.
