Työstönesteet, also known as cutting fluids or metalworking fluids, are liquids used during machining operations. Their primary purpose is to cool the workpiece and cutting tool, reduce friction between them, and flush away chips and debris generated during the cutting process. This leads to improved surface finish, extended tool life, and higher machining speeds.

There are several main types of työstönesteet. Straight oils are undiluted petroleum-based or synthetic oils that offer excellent lubrication but can be less effective at cooling and may require separate cleaning. Soluble oils are oil-in-water emulsions that provide good cooling and moderate lubrication. They are widely used due to their versatility and cost-effectiveness. Synthetic fluids are water-based solutions containing no oil, offering excellent cooling and good rust protection, but generally less lubrication than oil-based fluids. Semi-synthetics are a blend of soluble oils and synthetics, aiming to combine the benefits of both.

Proper selection of a työstöeste depends on factors such as the material being machined, the type of machining operation (turning, milling, grinding), required surface finish, and environmental considerations. Maintenance is also crucial, involving filtration, concentration checks, and microbial control to prevent degradation and maintain performance.
