Työntömitta, known in English as a vernier caliper or simply caliper, is a precision measuring instrument. It is used to measure the external dimensions of an object, internal dimensions, and depth. The basic components of a työntömitta include a fixed jaw, a sliding jaw, a main scale, and a vernier scale. The main scale is typically marked in millimeters or inches, while the vernier scale allows for finer measurements.

To take a measurement, the sliding jaw is moved until the jaws are firmly in contact with the object being measured. The reading is then taken by observing where the zero mark on the vernier scale aligns with the main scale, and then identifying the division on the vernier scale that most closely aligns with a division on the main scale. This allows for measurements with a precision typically down to 0.02 mm or 0.001 inches, depending on the instrument.

Työntömitat are commonly made of steel, but can also be found in other materials. They are essential tools in various fields, including machining, engineering, manufacturing, and woodworking, where accurate measurements are critical for quality control and precision assembly. Digital versions of the työntömitta are also widely available, offering a digital display for easier reading and often additional features like data output.
