A tyttönimi is a Finnish term referring to a woman's maiden name, the surname she held before marriage. This concept is distinct from the married name, which is the surname a woman adopts upon entering into matrimony. In Finland, as in many other cultures, it has historically been common for women to adopt their husband's surname. However, Finnish law has evolved to offer more flexibility.
While traditionally women took their husband's surname, current legislation allows for a woman to retain her
