Tyhjiöastian is a Finnish term referring to a sealed enclosure that can be evacuated to create a low-pressure or vacuum environment. The word combines tyhjiö meaning vacuum and astia meaning vessel or container. In practice, tyhjiöastian are used to provide a controlled atmosphere free of most gases, enabling experiments and processes that require minimal gas interactions.

Construction and materials commonly used for tyhjiöastian include stainless steel or aluminum bodies for strength and low outgassing. Interiors are often electropolished to reduce contamination, and flanges and ports allow electrical feedthroughs, cooling lines, gas connections, or pumping access. Sealing relies on elastomeric O-rings or metal seals to achieve leak-tight joints, while viewports, vents, and safety devices are integrated as needed.

Vacuum generation within a tyhjiöastian is achieved through a staged pumping system. Roughing pumps bring the chamber down from atmospheric pressure, followed by high-vacuum pumps such as turbomolecular or ion pumps to reach lower pressures. Vacuum levels are monitored with gauges appropriate to the regime, including Pirani, cold cathode, or ionization gauges. To maintain performance, chambers are designed to minimize outgassing, and many are cleaned or baked before use.
