Twoharbor is a coastal town and port situated on the edge of a sheltered inlet known locally as the Twin Bays. The name reflects its geographic feature: two natural harbors separated by a narrow promontory that allows inter-harbor transit and a continuous waterfront. The town lies within a temperate maritime climate, with mild winters and cool summers, and a rocky shoreline interspersed with sandy beaches.

Twoharbor's harbor system consists of the North Harbor and the South Harbor, linked by a channel and protected by separate breakwaters. The port handles commercial fishing vessels, coastal freight, and passenger ferries. A third, smaller marina serves leisure craft. The waterfront supports a mix of warehouses, shipyards, and terminal facilities, along with a historic lighthouse and a promenade.

Historically, Twoharbor developed from a pair of fishing hamlets that grew into a regional trading point during the late medieval period. The arrival of rail and road connections in the 19th and 20th centuries expanded trade, while modernization of cranes, quays, and dredging increased cargo capacity. After World War II, the town diversified into tourism and light industry, preserving much of its maritime heritage.

As of the latest estimates, Twoharbor had a population around 30,000 residents. The local government is a municipal council responsible for harbor management, urban planning, and environmental stewardship. The town hosts annual maritime events, including a two-harbor festival that celebrates its twin harbor identity.
