Twinturbines refers to a type of internal combustion engine that utilizes two turbochargers. This setup is employed to enhance engine performance, particularly in applications demanding high power output or improved efficiency across a wider operating range. The use of two turbochargers can address the limitations of a single turbocharger, such as turbo lag, which is the delay between when the throttle is applied and when the turbocharger produces significant boost.

There are several common configurations for twinturbine systems. Parallel twinturbines involve two identical turbochargers that each feed a portion of the engine's cylinders. This setup helps to reduce the size and inertia of each turbocharger, thus mitigating turbo lag. Sequential twinturbines utilize two turbochargers of different sizes. A smaller, faster-spooling turbocharger operates at lower engine speeds, providing immediate boost. As engine speed increases, a larger turbocharger takes over, providing higher boost pressure for peak power. A staged or sequential system can also employ both turbos working together at higher RPMs.

The advantages of a twinturbine system include a broader powerband, reduced turbo lag, and potentially higher peak power compared to a single turbocharger of equivalent displacement. However, twinturbine systems are more complex, heavier, and can be more expensive to manufacture and maintain due to the increased number of components.
