A turbosupercharger, often referred to as a turbo-compound or turbo-compound engine, is a type of internal combustion engine that combines a turbocharger with a supercharger. The primary purpose of this system is to increase the engine's power output and efficiency by forcing more air into the combustion chambers.

The turbocharger uses exhaust gases to spin a turbine, which is connected to a compressor. This compressor then forces extra air into the engine, increasing its volumetric efficiency. However, turbochargers are most effective at higher engine speeds and can suffer from turbo lag, a delay in power delivery when the throttle is opened.

A supercharger, on the other hand, is mechanically driven by the engine's crankshaft. It provides boost at all engine speeds, eliminating turbo lag. However, superchargers consume engine power to operate, which can reduce overall efficiency.

In a turbosupercharger system, the turbocharger and supercharger work in tandem. Typically, the supercharger is engaged at lower engine speeds to provide immediate boost and overcome turbo lag. As the engine speed increases, the turbocharger becomes more effective, and its boost pressure can take over or supplement the supercharger's output. This combination aims to deliver consistent, high levels of boost across a wide range of engine operating conditions, leading to enhanced performance and potentially improved fuel economy compared to engines using only a turbocharger or supercharger.
