Turbofläktar, often translated as turbofans, are a type of jet engine that combines aspects of turbojets and propeller-driven engines. They are characterized by the presence of a large fan at the front, which is driven by a turbine stage. This fan bypasses a significant portion of the air around the core engine, propelling the aircraft through the force of this bypass air.

The bypass air generates a substantial amount of thrust, often more than the core engine itself. This makes turbofans more fuel-efficient and quieter than pure turbojets, especially at subsonic speeds. The ratio of air that bypasses the core to the air that enters the core is known as the bypass ratio. High-bypass turbofans, with a high bypass ratio, are commonly used on commercial airliners, while low-bypass turbofans are often found on military aircraft where a balance between thrust and speed is crucial.

The core engine of a turbofan operates similarly to a turbojet, compressing incoming air, mixing it with fuel, igniting the mixture, and expelling the hot gases through a nozzle. This process drives the turbine, which in turn powers both the compressor and the large fan at the front. Turbofans have become the dominant engine type for most modern aircraft due to their efficiency and performance advantages.
