A turbocharger, often called a turbo, is a forced induction device that increases an engine's efficiency and power output by forcing extra compressed air into the combustion chamber. It consists of two main parts: a turbine and a compressor, connected by a common shaft. The turbine is powered by the engine's exhaust gases, which spin the turbine wheel at very high speeds. This spinning turbine drives the compressor wheel, which draws in ambient air, compresses it, and then delivers it to the engine's intake manifold.

The increased volume of air entering the cylinders allows for more fuel to be injected, resulting in a more powerful combustion stroke. This boost in power is achieved without significantly increasing the engine's displacement. Turbochargers can improve fuel economy by allowing smaller, more efficient engines to produce the power of larger, less efficient ones. However, they can also introduce turbo lag, a delay between when the throttle is applied and when the turbocharger produces significant boost. Modern turbocharger designs and engine management systems have largely mitigated this issue.

Turbochargers are commonly found in a wide range of vehicles, from small passenger cars to large trucks and performance-oriented automobiles. They are also used in industrial engines and marine applications. The design and implementation of turbochargers are critical to engine performance and efficiency.
