Turbidimetria is an analytical method used to measure the turbidity of a liquid. Turbidity refers to the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by suspended solids. This method relies on the principle of light scattering, where a beam of light is passed through a sample, and the amount of light that is scattered by the suspended particles is measured.

The intensity of the scattered light is directly proportional to the concentration of suspended solids in the sample. Turbidimeters typically consist of a light source (often a tungsten lamp or LED), a sample holder, and a detector (like a photodiode or photomultiplier tube) positioned at a specific angle to the light beam, usually 90 degrees (nephelometry). Some instruments may also measure the attenuation of the light beam (turbidimetry in its strictest sense).

Turbidimetria is widely applied in various fields. In water quality monitoring, it is used to assess the cleanliness of drinking water, wastewater, and natural water bodies. It helps identify pollution from sources like soil erosion, industrial discharge, and sewage. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is employed to check for particulate contamination in injectable drugs and other sterile solutions. Food and beverage production also utilizes turbidimetria for quality control, such as measuring the clarity of juices, wines, and beers. In industrial processes, it can monitor the effectiveness of filtration systems or the concentration of suspensions. The results are often reported in units such as Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) or Formazin Nephelometric Units (FNU).
