Tuntohäiriö, also known as paresthesia, refers to abnormal sensations in the skin, such as prickling, tingling, numbness, or burning, without any apparent physical cause. These sensations can occur anywhere on the body but are most common in the hands and feet. While often temporary and harmless, persistent or severe tuntohäiriö can indicate an underlying medical condition.

The causes of tuntohäiriö are varied. Temporary occurrences can be due to prolonged pressure on a nerve, such as when a limb "falls asleep" after being in an awkward position. More persistent tuntohäiriö can arise from nerve damage or compression, which can be caused by conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, or herniated discs. Systemic diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and vitamin deficiencies (particularly B12) can also lead to widespread paresthesia. Certain infections, autoimmune disorders, and even anxiety can contribute to these sensory disturbances.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and neurological tests. Depending on the suspected cause, further investigations like blood tests, nerve conduction studies, or imaging scans may be required. Treatment strategies focus on addressing the underlying cause. For temporary paresthesia, simply changing position or relieving pressure is often sufficient. For nerve compression, physical therapy, medication, or surgery might be recommended. If a systemic disease is identified, managing that condition is paramount. In cases where no specific cause is found, symptom management techniques, such as medications for nerve pain, may be employed.
