The third category is something the user is, which refers to biometric characteristics. Examples include fingerprints, iris scans, facial recognition, or voice patterns. Biometric factors are unique to the individual, making them generally more secure but also more complex to implement and manage.

In practice, multi-factor authentication (MFA) utilizes two or more of these distinct categories to enhance security. By requiring a combination of, for instance, a password (what you know) and a code from a mobile app (what you have), the risk of unauthorized access is significantly reduced compared to using a single identification factor. This layered approach provides a more robust defense against identity theft and system breaches.
