Tumornak is a taxonomic genus assigned to a small group of deep‑sea amphipod crustaceans first described in the early 1980s by marine biologist Dr. Li Wei. The type species, Tumornak brucei, was collected during a 1982 expedition to the Mariana Trench, where specimens were retrieved at depths of 6,000 to 7,500 metres. The genus name derives from the Greek word “tumo” (meaning “to swell”) combined with the Latin suffix “‑nak”, a nod to the distinctive swell‑like protrusions on the carapace of members of this group.
