Tumorklassifizierung, also known as tumor classification, is the process of categorizing tumors based on various criteria. This classification is crucial for diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis. The primary basis for classification is the origin of the tumor. Tumors are broadly divided into benign and malignant. Benign tumors are non-cancerous, grow slowly, and do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors, or cancers, are characterized by uncontrolled growth and the ability to invade surrounding tissues and metastasize to distant sites.

Further classification involves identifying the tissue type from which the tumor arises. For instance, carcinomas originate from epithelial cells, sarcomas from connective tissues, leukemias from blood-forming cells, and lymphomas from lymphatic cells. Histological examination, which involves microscopic analysis of tumor cells, plays a vital role in this differentiation. Pathologists examine cellular morphology, growth patterns, and other microscopic features to determine the tumor's specific type and grade.

Tumor grade refers to how abnormal the tumor cells look under a microscope and how quickly they are likely to grow and spread. A higher grade generally indicates a more aggressive tumor. In addition to tissue type and grade, staging is another critical aspect of tumor classification. Staging systems, such as the TNM system (Tumor, Node, Metastasis), describe the extent of the cancer, including the size of the primary tumor, whether it has spread to nearby lymph nodes, and whether it has metastasized to distant parts of the body. This comprehensive classification allows clinicians to make informed decisions regarding patient care.
