These areas are not randomly distributed but are strongly associated with tectonic plate boundaries. The vast majority of the world's active volcanoes are found along these zones.

The most prominent tulivuorivyöhykkeillä is the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped zone encircling the Pacific Ocean. This region accounts for approximately 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. Other significant volcanic belts exist along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the East African Rift Valley, and the Mediterranean region.
