The name "ttäen" (also spelled *tteon* or *tteon-ttae*) translates roughly to "counting game" or "number game," reflecting its core mechanics. It is believed to have been played for centuries, particularly among children and rural communities, though its exact origins remain unclear.

The game is typically played by two or more players seated in a circle. One player begins by holding up a certain number of fingers (often one to five) and then quickly hides their hand behind their back. The other players must guess the number of fingers shown by asking yes-or-no questions. For example, a player might ask, "Is the number greater than three?" or "Is it an even number?" The goal is to deduce the correct number through logical elimination. If a player guesses correctly, they become the next "leader" and repeat the process.

Ttäen is often associated with quick thinking, observation, and strategic questioning, making it a popular choice for sharpening cognitive skills.
