Tselluloosikiud, also known as regenerated cellulose fiber, is a manufactured fiber made from cellulose, a natural polymer found in plants. The most common source of cellulose for fiber production is wood pulp, though other plant materials like cotton linters or bamboo can also be used. The process involves dissolving the cellulose into a liquid form, typically using a chemical solvent, and then extruding this solution through tiny holes into a bath that regenerates the cellulose back into solid fibers.

Common types of tselluloosikiud include rayon, viscose, modal, and lyocell. Rayon, one of the oldest manufactured fibers, is produced through the viscose process, which involves a significant amount of chemicals and can have environmental impacts if not managed carefully. Modal is a type of rayon known for its softness and strength, often made from beechwood. Lyocell, such as Tencel, is produced through a more environmentally friendly closed-loop process that recycles most of the chemicals and water used.

These fibers possess characteristics that make them versatile. They are generally soft, breathable, and absorbent, similar to natural fibers like cotton. Tselluloosikiud can be dyed easily, resulting in vibrant colors, and they drape well, making them suitable for apparel such as clothing, lingerie, and home furnishings like curtains and bedding.
