Tryckteknikens, Swedish for printing techniques, encompasses a wide array of methods used to transfer ink or other marking materials onto a surface, typically paper or fabric. The fundamental principle involves creating a pattern or image on a printing plate or surface and then applying ink to the raised or recessed areas of this surface, which is then pressed onto the substrate. This process has evolved significantly over centuries, from early woodblock printing to modern digital technologies.

One of the oldest forms is relief printing, where the image is raised from the surface of the plate. Woodcuts and linocuts are classic examples. Conversely, intaglio printing involves incised lines or areas on the plate, with ink filling these depressions. Copperplate engraving and etching fall into this category. Lithography, developed in the late 18th century, is based on the principle that oil and water repel each other; an image is drawn with a greasy substance on a stone or plate, and then ink adheres only to the greasy areas.

Screen printing, also known as serigraphy, is a stencil-based method where ink is forced through a mesh screen onto the substrate. This technique is highly versatile and commonly used for textiles and posters. Offset lithography, a derivative of lithography, is the dominant commercial printing process today. It uses a flat plate where the image area is ink-receptive and the non-image area is water-receptive. The image is transferred to a rubber blanket and then to the paper, allowing for high-quality, high-speed printing. In recent decades, digital printing technologies like inkjet and laser printing have revolutionized the industry, offering on-demand printing and personalization without the need for traditional printing plates.
