Trycktakter is a term used in Swedish textile design and industry to describe printed patterns applied to fabrics, wallpapers, and other surfaces. It refers both to the visual language of a pattern—the motifs, the way they repeat, and the colorways—and to the production methods used to realize it.

The concept covers traditional and contemporary printing techniques, from hand-block printing and stenciling to industrial methods such as roller printing, screen printing, dye-sublimation, and digital textile printing. In practice, trycktakter encompasses the process of designing, selecting motifs, deciding repeat structure, and executing color separations and prints.

Historically, printed textiles emerged well before industry took hold, with early examples in various cultures. Mass production in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries transformed the availability of patterned fabrics and the vocabulary of prints. Today, digital printing allows rapid prototyping and small-batch production, while traditional methods still influence texture, hand feel, and artisanal quality.
