Trovanja, commonly translated as poisoning, refers to adverse health effects that arise from exposure to toxic substances or their metabolites. The condition can result from a single high-dose exposure or from repeated or chronic exposure to lower doses. It can affect any organ system and ranges from mild to life-threatening.

Causes and categories include chemical poisons such as pesticides, solvents, heavy metals, drugs, alcohol, and carbon monoxide or cyanide; natural toxins produced by organisms (for example, botulinum toxin or mushroom toxins); and biological toxins encountered in foodborne illness or occupational settings. Exposures can occur by ingestion, inhalation, dermal contact, or injection, and may be accidental, intentional, or environmental. Poisoning often requires rapid assessment to determine the agent, dose, and time since exposure.

Symptoms are diverse and depend on the substance and route of exposure. Common signs include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, confusion, weakness, and sweating. Severe poisoning may cause seizures, coma, respiratory failure, arrhythmias, kidney or liver injury, and death. Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation, exposure history, and laboratory tests such as toxicology screens and organ function panels.

Treatment emphasizes safety and decontamination, removing the person from further exposure, and supporting vital functions. Activated charcoal may be used for certain ingestions if given early; antidotes exist for select substances (for example, naloxone for opioid toxicity, acetylcysteine for acetaminophen). Supportive care and, when needed, intensive monitoring are essential.

Prevention focuses on safe storage and labeling of chemicals, poison-control awareness, proper food handling, and rapid access to medical help. Public health measures aim to reduce both accidental and intentional poisonings and to improve outcomes through timely treatment.
