Trombofilia refers to a condition characterized by an increased tendency to form blood clots. This predisposition, known as a hypercoagulable state, can lead to the development of dangerous clots in blood vessels, a process called thrombosis. These clots can obstruct blood flow, potentially causing serious health problems such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs or pulmonary embolism (PE) in the lungs.

There are two main categories of thrombophilia: inherited and acquired. Inherited thrombophilias are genetic conditions passed down from parents to children, resulting from mutations in specific genes that affect the blood clotting process. Common inherited thrombophilias include Factor V Leiden mutation and the prothrombin gene mutation. Acquired thrombophilias, on the other hand, develop later in life due to certain medical conditions, medications, or lifestyle factors. Examples include antiphospholipid syndrome, certain cancers, prolonged immobility, pregnancy, and the use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy.

The symptoms of thrombophilia are often related to the presence of blood clots. DVT may manifest as leg pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. PE can cause sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, and rapid heart rate. However, some individuals with thrombophilia may not experience any symptoms until a clot forms. Diagnosis typically involves a review of personal and family medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests to identify specific clotting abnormalities or genetic mutations. Treatment aims to prevent clot formation or to dissolve existing clots and may include anticoagulant medications.
