Troijalaiset refers to the inhabitants of the ancient city of Troy. This legendary city, located in northwestern Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), is famously known for its role in the Trojan War, a central event in Greek mythology. The story of the Trojan War, particularly as told in Homer's epic poem, the Iliad, depicts a protracted conflict between the Achaeans (Greeks) and the Trojans.

The Trojans were led by their king, Priam, and his sons, most notably Hector, a renowned warrior. The conflict, according to the myth, began with the abduction of Helen, the wife of Spartan king Menelaus, by the Trojan prince Paris. This act ignited a decade-long siege of Troy by the Achaean forces. The city itself was described as a formidable stronghold, protected by strong walls.

Despite their military prowess, particularly in the figure of Hector, the Trojans were ultimately defeated. The fall of Troy is famously attributed to the stratagem of the Trojan Horse, a large wooden horse filled with Achaean warriors, which was brought into the city as a supposed peace offering. Once inside the walls, the Achaean soldiers emerged and opened the gates for the invading army, leading to the destruction and sacking of Troy.

The historical existence of Troy and the veracity of the Trojan War are subjects of ongoing debate among archaeologists and historians. Excavations at the site identified as Troy by Heinrich Schliemann in the late 19th century have revealed multiple layers of settlement, with Troy VIIa often considered a potential candidate for Homeric Troy, dating to the Late Bronze Age. The "Troijalaiset" therefore represent a people whose story, whether purely mythical or containing elements of historical truth, has profoundly influenced Western literature and culture.
