Troglobitism refers to the biological adaptation of organisms to life in caves or similar subterranean environments. These adaptations are often extreme and can include loss of sight, depigmentation, reduced metabolism, and enhanced non-visual senses such as touch and smell. Organisms exhibiting troglobitism are obligate cave dwellers, meaning they cannot survive outside of the cave ecosystem.

Cave environments are characterized by darkness, stable temperatures, high humidity, and often limited nutrient availability. Troglobites have evolved to cope with these conditions. For example, the absence of light has led to the reduction or complete loss of eyes and pigmentation, as these features are no longer advantageous and can be energetically costly to maintain.
