Triploblasts are bilaterally symmetric animals whose embryos develop three primary germ layers: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. These germ layers arise during early embryogenesis through a process called gastrulation, wherein the single-layered blastula reorganizes into a multilayered structure. The ectoderm forms the outer covering, giving rise to the skin, nervous system, and sensory organs; the endoderm lines the digestive tract and associated glands; the mesoderm generates muscles, the circulatory system, kidneys, and the skeletal framework.

The presence of a mesoderm distinguishes triploblasts from diploblasts, which possess only ectoderm and endoderm. This additional layer permits greater complexity in body plans, enabling the evolution of organ systems and more elaborate locomotion. Triploblasty is a defining characteristic of most animal phyla within the clade Bilateria, encompassing groups such as arthropods, mollusks, annelids, echinoderms, and chordates. Some simple organisms, like flatworms (Platyhelminthes), retain a reduced or secondary mesoderm, reflecting evolutionary modifications of the triploblastic condition.

Embryologically, the mesoderm originates from cells that migrate between the ectoderm and endoderm during gastrulation, often forming a transient structure called the blastopore lip. In chordates, the mesoderm further differentiates into somites, which segment the body and give rise to vertebrae and associated musculature.

Understanding triploblast development provides insight into the evolutionary transitions that enabled the diversification of animal life, as well as mechanisms underlying congenital malformations linked to germ‑layer formation.
