Satellites transmit signals that allow receivers on Earth to calculate the distance to each satellite. By receiving signals from at least four satellites, a receiver can determine its three-dimensional position (latitude, longitude, and altitude) and synchronize its clock.

The accuracy of trilateration depends on several factors, including the precision of the distance measurements, the geometry of the reference points (or satellites), and the presence of environmental interference. The farther apart the reference points are, the more accurate the resulting position determination tends to be.
