Trilateraatioperiaatteella refers to the principle of trilateration, a method used to determine an object's position based on its distance from three known points. This technique is widely applied in various fields, including navigation, surveying, and geophysics.

The core concept of trilateration relies on measuring the distance from the unknown point to each of the three reference points. Each distance measurement defines a sphere with the reference point as its center and the measured distance as its radius. The intersection of these three spheres will ideally result in a single point, which is the location of the object. In practice, due to measurement errors, the intersection might be a small region, and sophisticated algorithms are used to find the most probable location.

In Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS, trilateration is a fundamental principle. Satellites transmit signals that allow receivers on Earth to calculate the distance to each satellite. By receiving signals from at least four satellites, a receiver can determine its three-dimensional position (latitude, longitude, and altitude) and synchronize its clock.

The accuracy of trilateration depends on several factors, including the precision of the distance measurements, the geometry of the reference points (or satellites), and the presence of environmental interference. The farther apart the reference points are, the more accurate the resulting position determination tends to be.
