Transversaalinen is a Finnish adjective meaning transversal or crosswise. It is used across disciplines to describe something that intersects or runs across another object, or a relation characterized by such crossing.

In geometry and differential geometry, transversal concepts describe how objects meet. If M and N are submanifolds of a manifold X, they intersect transversely at a point p when the sum of their tangent spaces at p equals the tangent space of X: T_p M + T_p N = T_p X. Transverse intersections are typically stable under small perturbations and yield well-behaved intersection sets. When M and N have complementary dimensions so their intersection is nonempty, the dimension formula dim(M ∩ N) = dim M + dim N − dim X holds in the transverse case.

In physics and engineering, transversaalinen often denotes properties orthogonal to a chosen direction. A common example is transverse polarization of electromagnetic waves, where the electric and magnetic fields oscillate perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Transverse waves likewise have displacements or oscillations across the direction of travel.

The term derives from Latin transversus, meaning turned across, and entered Finnish as a technical loanword through Swedish and English. In everyday Finnish, related concepts are sometimes expressed with poikittainen or poikkileikkaus, while transversaalinen remains common in formal or scientific texts.
