Transposonområden, often referred to as transposable elements or transposons, are specific sequences of DNA that can change their position within a genome. This movement can occur within the same chromosome or to a different chromosome entirely. These mobile genetic elements are found in virtually all organisms, from bacteria to plants and animals, and are sometimes referred to as "jumping genes."

The process of transposition can lead to a variety of effects on the genome. It can alter the genetic makeup of an organism by inserting themselves into genes, potentially disrupting their function or causing mutations. This insertion can also influence gene regulation by affecting the expression of nearby genes. In some cases, transposition can facilitate the rearrangement of genetic material, contributing to the evolution of genomes over time.

Transposonområden are broadly categorized into two main classes based on their mechanism of transposition. Class I elements, known as retrotransposons, replicate via an RNA intermediate, using a process similar to reverse transcription. Class II elements, or DNA transposons, move directly from one DNA location to another without an RNA intermediate, often involving a "cut and paste" mechanism. The relative abundance and activity of different transposonområden can vary significantly between species and even within different tissues of the same organism. Their dynamic nature makes them a significant factor in genomic plasticity and evolutionary processes.
