Transportgericht is a term used to describe a specialized judiciary dedicated to disputes arising from transportation and logistics. In theory, a transportgericht would handle civil and regulatory cases connected to carriage of goods and passengers, shipping and aviation, road, rail and public transit operations, as well as ancillary services such as warehousing, insurance, and logistics contracts. The concept envisions a streamlined, expertise-driven forum that focuses on transport-specific issues, liability regimes, and safety regulations.

The scope of a transportgericht would typically include contract disputes between carriers and customers, carriage liability claims (loss, damage, delay), insurance coverage questions, and claims arising from transportation accidents. It could also address regulatory matters such as licensing, safety compliance, environmental rules, and competition issues within the transport sector. In cross-border cases, the court would need mechanisms for recognizing foreign judgments and harmonizing interpretations of international conventions governing transport.

In current practice, the existence of a dedicated transport court is not widespread. Most jurisdictions resolve transport disputes within general civil or commercial courts, or through specialized divisions, commercial courts, or administrative tribunals. Maritime and aviation issues may be handled by specialized forums or by international arbitration in many countries. The transportgericht concept remains largely theoretical or illustrative of the benefits of expertise-driven adjudication, such as faster decisions, uniform interpretations of transport law, and greater consistency across related disputes.
