Translúcidas refers to objects or materials that allow light to pass through them, but do not allow objects on the other side to be seen clearly. This is distinct from transparent materials, through which objects can be seen distinctly, and opaque materials, which do not allow light to pass through at all. The degree of translucency can vary widely, from slightly cloudy to nearly clear.

Examples of translucent materials are common in everyday life. Frosted glass is a well-known example, often used in bathroom windows or decorative lampshades to diffuse light and provide privacy. Thin paper, wax paper, and many types of plastic are also translucent. In nature, some biological tissues, such as the skin on certain parts of the body or the wings of some insects, can be translucent.

The phenomenon of translucency arises from the way light interacts with the material's internal structure. In translucent materials, light rays are scattered as they pass through, preventing the formation of a clear image. This scattering can be caused by microscopic irregularities, particles suspended within the material, or a complex internal surface structure. The effect is to diffuse the light, softening shadows and creating a glowing effect when illuminated. This property is often utilized in lighting design to create ambient or decorative illumination.
