Zones are defined by criteria such as electric field strength, carrier concentration, or potential. The idea is to provide a more granular picture than conventional lumped models.

In this framework, typical zones include an emitter zone where injection occurs, a base or channel zone where transport is controlled by drift or diffusion, and a collector or depletion zone where carrier extraction and field effects dominate. It can aid in analyzing current crowding, velocity saturation, and hot-carrier effects.
