Transiitit, often referred to as transition metals, are a group of chemical elements located in the d-block of the periodic table. They are characterized by having valence electrons in two adjacent electron shells. This unique electronic configuration leads to a variety of distinctive chemical properties.

A key characteristic of transition metals is their ability to form stable ions with incomplete d-subshells. This is in contrast to main group elements, which typically achieve noble gas electron configurations. Consequently, transition metals exhibit variable oxidation states, meaning they can exist in multiple ionic forms. For example, iron can exist as Fe^2+ or Fe^3+.

Many transition metals and their compounds are known for their catalytic activity. Their ability to easily change oxidation states allows them to facilitate chemical reactions without being consumed themselves. Furthermore, transition metal ions often impart color to compounds. This is due to the absorption and emission of visible light as electrons move between different d-orbital energy levels. This phenomenon is exploited in the production of pigments and dyes. Examples include the blue color of copper sulfate and the vibrant colors of many gemstones, which are often due to transition metal impurities.

The majority of transition metals are solid at room temperature and exhibit high melting and boiling points, as well as high densities. They are generally good conductors of heat and electricity. Their unique properties make them essential in a wide range of applications, from construction and electronics to medicine and catalysis.
