Transcendens is a Latin adjective meaning "going beyond" or "transcendent." It derives from trans- "across" and scandere "to climb" and forms the present active participle of the verb transcendere (to transcend). In Latin, transcendens is used to describe things that surpass ordinary limits or that lie beyond standard categories.

In philosophy and theology, the term appears in discussions of transcendence—the quality of going beyond empirical experience, knowledge, or immanent existence.
