A trackback is a mechanism used in blogging and other content management systems to notify other websites when you link to their content. It functions as a notification system that alerts the original author of a post that someone has referenced their work. When a user publishes a post that includes a link to another blog post, they can send a trackback to the original post. This trackback contains information about the linking post, such as its title, a snippet of its content, and a URL to the post itself. The receiving blog then displays these trackbacks, often in a dedicated section, allowing readers to see which other sites are discussing or referencing the same topic.

Trackbacks were designed to facilitate a more interconnected web of online discussions, enabling conversations to flow between different blogs. They are distinct from pingbacks, which are a more automated and generally preferred method of cross-linking notification. While trackbacks require manual setup or configuration on the linking side, pingbacks operate automatically when a link is published. In practice, trackbacks have become less common than they once were, with many platforms favoring pingbacks or other forms of social sharing. However, the concept of notifying other authors of links remains a fundamental aspect of collaborative online content creation.
