Tracantes are a type of marine invertebrate belonging to the phylum Mollusca. Specifically, they are a group within the class Bivalvia, meaning they have a shell composed of two hinged parts. While the term "tracantes" is not a formally recognized scientific classification, it is often used colloquially to refer to bivalves that are known for their ability to attach themselves to submerged surfaces.

These mollusks typically live in marine environments, from intertidal zones to deeper waters. Their shells can vary greatly in shape, size, and color depending on the species. The defining characteristic of what might be called a "tracante" is their sessile nature as adults, meaning they become permanently fixed to a substrate. This attachment is usually achieved through a strong byssus, which is a collection of silky threads secreted by the mollusk from a specialized gland. These byssal threads anchor the animal firmly to rocks, pilings, shells, or even the seabed.

Tracantes are filter feeders. They open their shells and extend their siphons to draw in water, filtering out microscopic food particles such as plankton and organic detritus. When threatened or during unfavorable conditions, they can close their shells tightly, providing protection. Examples of bivalves often referred to by this informal term include mussels, oysters, and some scallops that exhibit strong byssal attachment. Their ecological role is significant, as they can form dense beds that provide habitat and food sources for other marine organisms and play a part in water filtration.
