Toygrammar is a term used in linguistics and computer science to describe a deliberately simplified grammar model that is used for teaching, demonstration, or experimental work. It is not intended to capture the full complexity of natural languages, but to illustrate how grammatical structure and parsing work in a controlled setting.

Typically, a toygrammar consists of a small set of nonterminal symbols, a starting symbol, a lexicon of words categorized into parts of speech, and a finite or context-free set of production rules. The most common form is a context-free grammar, optionally enhanced with probabilistic rules or constraints to guide parsing or generation.

A classic example uses productions such as: S -> NP VP; NP -> Det N; Det -> a | the; N -> cat | dog; VP -> V NP; V -> chases | sees. This tiny grammar can generate sentences like the cat chases a dog, and serves as a testbed for parsers, grammar induction experiments, and simple natural-language processing demonstrations.

Limitations of toygrammars include their inability to model long-distance dependencies, agreement phenomena, idioms, or semantics with real-world richness. They are inherently simplified and do not reflect the full variability of natural languages. As such, they are used as educational tools or initial scaffolds for experiments rather than as complete linguistic models.

In research and education, toygrammars help students and developers reason about grammar form, parsing strategies, and grammar engineering before tackling real languages or large-scale corpora.
