The most common protocol used in torrent networks is BitTorrent. When a user wants to download a file, they obtain a small metadata file, typically with a .torrent extension. This file contains information about the file itself and, crucially, the addresses of "trackers." Trackers are servers that help coordinate peers, informing them of other users who have pieces of the desired file. Once connected to other peers, users can download and upload different parts of the file simultaneously.

The efficiency of torrent networks stems from their ability to distribute load. As more users download a file, they also become uploaders, thus increasing the overall availability and download speed for others. This swarm behavior is a key characteristic of these networks. While torrenting is a legitimate technology for distributing large files, it is also widely used for sharing copyrighted material without permission, which has led to legal challenges and debate surrounding its use.
