Tootmisviis is a term used in Estonian to describe the set of processes, technologies and organizational practices that define how products or services are produced. It refers to the method or approach used to convert inputs such as raw materials, energy and information into finished goods, taking into account equipment, layout, workforce and quality control. In manufacturing theory, tootmisviis is closely linked to production systems and process design, and it is chosen based on product requirements, volume, variability and capital availability.

Common classifications reflect production contexts. By process: job production (custom items), batch production (groups), flow or mass production (large quantities) and continuous production (uninterrupted). By technology: conventional machining, casting and molding, additive manufacturing, assembly lines and automated systems.

Decision factors include product design, lead times, demand stability, capital cost and labor, flexibility to accommodate changes, and required quality. The choice of tootmisviis affects cost, lead time and environmental impact.

Performance is assessed with cycle time, throughput, yield, scrap and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). Digitalization and automation—often categorized as Industry 4.0—enable real-time monitoring and data-driven optimization. Sustainability concerns such as energy use and waste reduction increasingly influence method selection.
