Tootesilt is a term used in regional geology to describe a fine-grained sediment dominated by silt-sized particles, typically 2 to 63 micrometers in diameter. It often includes clay minerals and varying amounts of organic matter, giving it a light to medium brown color when exposed. In hand specimen, tootesilt is relatively soft and plastic when wet, becoming stiffer as it dries or when compacted.

Formation and properties: Tootesilt forms in low-energy settings such as lakes, backwaters, and slow-moving sections of rivers and floodplains, where suspended silt settles from the water column. Over time, the accumulation may be interbedded with organic-rich layers or minor sand layers. The texture is finer than typical loam and coarser than clay, with variable cohesiveness depending on moisture and cementation.
