Tootepääsust is the Estonian term for production access, referring to the rights and procedures that govern who may connect to live production environments. This includes both information technology (production servers, databases, customer-facing services, deployment pipelines) and, in manufacturing contexts, operational technology (industrial control systems on the factory floor). The aim is to minimize risk by ensuring that access to production environments is restricted to authorized personnel and limited to the tasks required.

Core principles include least privilege, need-to-know, and segregation of duties. Access is granted through formal requests, role-based access control, and time-bound or task-based approvals. Privileged access is often managed with privileged access management tools, multi-factor authentication, and break-glass procedures for emergency situations. Technical controls emphasize identity and access management, secure remote access via jump hosts or bastion services, session monitoring, and comprehensive audit logs. Accounts are revoked promptly when no longer needed, and regular access reviews are conducted.

Governance typically links production access to change management. Deployments or modifications to production usually require approved change tickets, code reviews, and confirmation from the production owners. Documentation and traceability of who accessed what and when are standard expectations, with periodic reports to compliance or security teams.

Risk and compliance considerations address insider threats, misconfigurations, and regulatory requirements such as ISO 27001, PCI DSS, and GDPR. In manufacturing contexts, production access also intersects with safety and OT-specific controls, underscoring the need for robust, auditable processes.
